Santa Fe’s SD45-2B #5513
In the 1980s, the Santa Fe Railroad had several SD45s and 45-2s in their roster with some of these units involved in some unfortunate circumstances involving wrecks, damaging their cabs and front ends beyond repair to their previous state. In the mid-80s, many of the SD45 and 45-2s were being re-shopped at their San Bernardino engine facility for remanufacturing. The program involved the rebuilding of eight SD45-2s into “cabless” B-units, the 5510-class numbered 5510-5517 from the original units #5651,5676,5703,5626,5701,5633,5684,5700. ATSF SD45-2B 5510 had its dynamic brake grids in the standard location over the engine room, 5511-5517 had the dynamics over what had been the short hood. Sadly, with the merger of BNSF, the last four BNSF SD45-2Bs on the roster (7504-7506, 7508) were renumbered BNSF 6520-6523 during November-December 2006. These have now all been sold for scrap.
The “5513” started life on Santa Fe’s power roster as 5526 in April of 1972. Acquired new from EMD in its classy Pinstriped paint scheme, it shortly got redressed in August of that same year in the striking yellow and blue warbonnet paint scheme. In November of 1987, it was remanufactured into a SD45-2B unit and renumbered 5513 where it remained in service on the roster (including being maintenance by Morrison-Knudsen in April 1994) until January 2000 when it was renumbered 7508 and “patched” for BNSF. As many of the SD45-2B units found their demise to the scrap yards, Santa Fe’s 5513/BNSF 7508 was no exception.
The model you will be acquiring, started too as a SD45-2 made by Athearn for their Genesis line. Previous work to the shell was made possibly with a new short hood and fabricated dynamic brake housing. Many hours were given to produce this fine scale model using detail parts from Details West, Detail Associates, Cal-Scale, Cannon & Co., A-Line, MV Products and Athearn to name a few. Much research went into recreating this accurate HO model. Some commercial parts not offered were created to give the 5513 that special touch. Finishing was completed using Tru-Colors Paint and Microscale decals. The original Athearn drive chassis has been upgraded to include a Digitrax DCC decoder, the speaker housing remains in place for adding a speaker to convert to sound if the operator chooses to do so.
